Can science make a difference beyond the classroom?

Grade 10 students recently explored this question through their Medical Uses of Radiation – Patient Information Project, which combined Physics, communication, and Service as Action. Students created patient-friendly booklets, colouring books, and comic-style guides explaining medical technologies such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, PET scans, and radiotherapy. Their goal was to help patients and families better understand medical procedures and reduce anxiety through clear scientific explanations.

As part of the Service as Action component, students identified a clinic, hospital department, or healthcare organisation where their resource could realistically be used and wrote a professional email offering their work for patient education purposes.

Several students received positive responses from medical organisations. One particularly encouraging reply came from Heidelberg University Hospital, where a student's booklet was forwarded to the Department of Radiation Oncology for use with young patients. The picture below shows one of the student-created images. It serves as an excellent example of how our Grade 10 students combined scientific understanding, creativity, empathy, and communication skills to produce a resource designed for a real audience and a real purpose.

This project challenged students to think beyond the classroom and consider how scientific knowledge can be used to support others. It was a powerful reminder that science is not only about understanding the world-it is also about making a positive difference in people's lives.
