Phorms Berlin Süd Visits Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing
In April 2025, a delegation of students and teachers from Phorms Berlin Süd embarked on a remarkable educational and cultural exchange to China. Organised in collaboration with China Austausch, the programme combined rich cultural immersion, historical sightseeing, and an intensive school partnership experience. Over 13 days, our students had the unique opportunity to experience life in three of China’s most fascinating cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing.
Arrival in Shanghai – A Modern Metropolis
The group arrived in Shanghai on 7th April, where they were warmly welcomed by a German-speaking guide. Their first taste of Chinese innovation came immediately with a thrilling journey on the world-famous Transrapid Maglev Train, followed by a transfer to the hotel.
The following day, 8th April, was dedicated to discovering the city’s traditional and modern facets. Students explored the historic Old Town and the serene Yu Garden, one of China’s finest classical gardens. A walk down the bustling Nanjing Road led to stunning views of the Bund waterfront, where colonial architecture meets futuristic skyscrapers. An educational visit to a traditional silk spinning factory introduced the students to one of China's oldest and most celebrated crafts.
On 9th April, the group delved deeper into Shanghai’s cultural treasures, visiting the prestigious Shanghai Museum, the spiritually significant Jade Buddha Temple, and experiencing breathtaking views from the Shanghai Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world.
That evening, students had the chance to experience Shanghai independently: they took a subway ride into the city to revisit the Bund, this time at night, to see the famous skyline illuminated—a truly memorable experience and a wonderful conclusion to their stay in Shanghai.
Hangzhou – Cultural Immersion and School Exchange
On 10th April, the group travelled by coach to Hangzhou, a city renowned for its natural beauty and historic significance. After arriving and checking into their hotel, students had free time to explore the city at their leisure.
11th April offered a blend of sightseeing and cultural learning, beginning with a picturesque boat ride on West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by a visit to the historic Hefang Street and its ancient pharmacy. A trip to a local tea plantation allowed students to learn firsthand about the importance of tea culture in China. In the afternoon, the delegation was formally introduced to their partner school, marking the beginning of the exchange programme.
Between 12th and 15th April, our students participated fully in the life of Tonglu Sanhe Junior High School. The exchange programme was rich and varied:Classroom Visits: Students attended lessons across various subjects, gaining insights into educational practices and classroom culture in China.Flag Ceremony: A formal introduction at a school-wide flag ceremony highlighted the importance of international friendship and cooperation.Cultural Workshops: Activities included learning traditional Chinese calligraphy, practising Chinese painting, participating in an introduction to Chinese drama, and engaging in Chinese opera workshops.Sports and Activities: The programme also included morning gymnastics sessions and a friendly football match between the German and Chinese students, promoting camaraderie through sport.Visits to Partner Schools: Students had the opportunity to visit the Fuchunjiang School, where they were introduced to traditional arts such as paper cutting.During this time, students were hosted by local families, offering an authentic glimpse into Chinese daily life, cuisine, and traditions. The warm hospitality and new friendships forged during these days left a profound impression on all participants.
On 16th April, after a final morning of activities and an emotional farewell ceremony at Sanhe Junior High School, the group departed Hangzhou aboard a sleeper train bound for Beijing.
Beijing – A Journey into China’s History
Upon arrival in Beijing on 17th April, the group immediately began a sightseeing programme showcasing the grandeur of China’s historical and cultural achievements. In the evening, students enjoyed a final independent experience: after visiting a local shopping district, they returned to their hotel by Beijing’s efficient subway system, gaining a deeper sense of the city’s rhythm and everyday life.
Finally, on 19th April, the group transferred to the airport for the return flight to Germany, bringing an end to an extraordinary journey.
Reflections
This exchange was an unparalleled educational experience, providing students not only with academic knowledge but also with profound cultural insights, enhanced intercultural understanding, and lasting international friendships.
Phorms Berlin Süd extends heartfelt thanks to our hosts at Tonglu Sanhe Junior High School, China Austausch, our guides, and all the families and staff who made this journey possible. We look forward to continuing this partnership and to welcoming Chinese students to Berlin in the future.
As the teacher responsible for this exchange, I could not be prouder of our students. Throughout the journey, they conducted themselves with maturity, curiosity, and respect, embracing every opportunity to learn and connect. It was inspiring to witness them grow not only as individuals but also as a cohesive group, strengthening their confidence, cultural understanding, and sense of independence with each new experience.
