Kathleen Macdonald, School Director

In 1985, Kathleen graduated from Dundee University, Scotland, with a teaching degree specialising in Geography, Computing Science and PE. In addition to teaching in Scotland, Kathleen has worked in France, Berlin and as a technical writer. She has been with H.I.S. since January 2001, initially as a classroom teacher, and since 2005 in the position of School Director.

Allyn Raw, Deputy Director, Primary School Principal

Allyn has a degree in European Studies from the University of Essex and a teaching certificate from Manchester Metropolitan University. He has taught in Cologne, Germany and worked in schools for children with special needs and as a carer in children’s homes in England. Allyn has been teaching at H.I.S. since 2003 and played a leading role in developing the PYP at the school. He is a member of the IB Educator Network as an IB Workshop Leader and works with IB teachers in other schools to develop understanding of the PYP.

Kate von Gizycki, PYP Co-ordinator

Kate graduated from Aberdeen University in Scotland, United Kingdom with an Honours degree in Primary Education. She has taught all primary classes from Early Primary one to Grade five, including whole school P.E., Music and Learning Support. Kate has been part of the H.I.S. community for 9 years and has previously taught in the U.K. and in international schools in Spain and Germany.

Kevin Whitmore, Secondary Principal, DP Co-ordinator

Kevin has a Masters degree in Information Technology in Education. He has over 25 years of teaching and administrative experience. He worked at Osaka International School in Osaka, Japan and before that as Head of Technology at Marcellin College in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to his other roles, Kevin teaches Theory of Knowledge and Technology.

Sarah Al-Benna, IB Middle Years Programme Co-ordinator

Sarah studied Chemistry at University College London before continuing her studies and completing a PhD in 2002 in inorganic chemistry at the University of Leeds. Following this she completed her PGCE teaching qualification in sciences, after which, she taught in the UK, in Reading and Chester, followed by a year at The International School of London. She then moved Germany with her family in 2008 where she has since been at H.I.S. teaching sciences in the MYP and Chemistry in the DP.

Thomas Frenzel, Managing Director

Thomas has a Masters degree in Business Administration and Economy. He joined Phorms Education in 2009 and has been with H.I.S. since 2010. Previously he worked as Marketing Director for the business media section of the publishing house Gruner+Jahr in Hamburg. In addition to his role at H.I.S., Thomas is also responsible for further schools and kitas in our network in Baden-Württemberg.

Anke Schumacher, Admissions Counsellor

Anke studied at the Universities of Cologne and Duesseldorf and spent one semester at UC Davis in California. She has 15 years of teaching experience at German and International Schools. After moving to Heidelberg in 2007, Anke joined H.I.S. as a German Teacher. She took on the role of Middle Years Programme Coordinator for 8 years, successfully guiding H.I.S. through the IB Authorization in 2012 and the first IB Evaluation in 2015, and is now responsible for Admissions at H.I.S.

Nathalie Sommer, Administration Manager

Nathalie is a native of Heidelberg and remained in the city to study Marketing and Health Management. She moved on to Stuttgart and Berlin where she completed a Masters in Business Administration. Before joining H.I.S., Nathalie worked in Event Management and spent a year in Syracuse, New York as an exchange student.
