Curriculum

H.I.S. is authorized to provide the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the IB Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate (IB). The school has also achieved "Candidate Status" for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
The IBO Mission Statement has been translated into a set of learning outcomes identified in the IB learner profile, which applies to all three IBO programmes.

The school offers its students an outstanding education at an international level. This requires specific attention to the individual abilities, talents and needs of every student, to ensure the intellectual, social, moral, emotional and spiritual development of each individual.

The language of instruction is English. Where required, English as an Additional Language (EAL) is provided. German is offered at all levels from German as an Additional Language (GAL) to Advanced German with special focus on the requirements of learning a mother tongue. Advanced German is also offered for students who have reached a sufficient level of ability in German and who do not require additional support in English. Spanish is offered from Grade 6.

The curriculum at the Heidelberg International School is designed to:

  • encourage self-discipline, empathy, tolerance, openness, respect, the ability to cope with change, and the ability to make rational decisions
  • foster students' emotional development by recognising their feelings and sensitivity, and by building up their self-esteem and a positive outlook on life
  • build physical fitness through athletic activities and the encouragement of physical well-being
  • support the students in the development of their personality and philosophy of life, the ability to recognise and solve problems, social competence and responsibility, and their respect for others and the environment.
